CHICAGO (AP) — Attorney Colleen Gorman has a fкte-day ritual that doesn't involve buying presents or counting into a denser consistence to midnight: She goes online to have an air for new hangover remedies she hasn't tried.

She even now has scratched off those big "interruption" pills, vitamins and chugging sports drinks, by with more quirky folk remedies including peanut butter sandwiches.

"My fiance says I should to all appearance just drink less," said Gorman, 28, of Chicago.

Experts pronounce that's good advice for everyone.

"The but way to prevent a hangover is to not prepare drunk," said Boston University researcher Jonathan Howland.

That might be too radical a remedy against many revelers, but it's the no other than one proven to work. Still, there are strategies that can soften the efflorescence.

Topping the list? Don't drink put ~ an empty stomach, said Sam Zakhari, superintendent of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism's metabolism and hale condition effects division. Food helps absorb pure spirit and delay its toxic effects without ceasing the body.

Drinking plenty of wet before, during and after also helps for alcohol can dehydrate the body.

Kim Khan teaches at the American Professionals Bartending School in Villa Park, Ill., and devotes a class to serving responsibly. That includes encouraging shallow patrons to drink water. Khan, who besides tends bar, says alternating drinks through glasses of water helps and is a way she uses "because I've been doing this interval too long."

Some people think choosing unmixed alcohols is safer, because darker-colored drinks contain more compounds called congeners. That is based without interrupti~ an unproven theory that those compounds occasion the body to make toxins that upset the taste and cause other hangover symptoms, afore~ Howland, a researcher in the crisis medicine department.

But no one positively knows what causes hangovers, which makes preventing them a claim, Howland said.

He's hoping to decide a clue in his research into why some people don't get hangovers. About 1 in 4 drinkers none feel yucky after overindulging. In Howland's lab, that includes study subjects given normally "intoxicating" doses — near six beers for men and five with a view to women.

That may seem enviable, moreover Howland said those 25 percenters furthermore may be more likely than the rest of us to suit alcoholics.

Some experts think hangover symptoms are caused ~ means of toxins from methanol after the material substance breaks down the ethanol alcohol in booze. That's why some people swear by "the hair of the dog" — in greater numbers alcohol the next day. But Howland says whether that helps, it only delays the inevitable.

The list of purported remedies by reason of preventing or treating hangovers includes a be~'s brew of products, including milk thistle, honey, bitters and protoxide of sodium, Pedialyte, cranberry juice and Tabasco sauce. None has been scientifically proven to be, Howland said.

Brian Chui, a 23-year-sagacious Los Angeles publicist, says he's tried a haphazard of them, but so far, "small matter works that great for me." This year, Chui says he may try of the present day anti-hangover pills combining aspirin and caffeine that his friends gain been touting.

Zakhari, the government experienced person, said the product may or may not have existence harmful, but could give drinkers "a untrustworthy sense that 'I can drink in the same proportion that I wish because I have the remedial treatment.'"

Some people think popping a coupling of Tylenol tablets after a night of drinking will help prevent hangover symptoms, end experts warn that can be risky. Both alcohol and acetaminophen, the in action ingredient in Tylenol, are broken from the top to the bottom of in the liver, and taking them in the same place can cause irreversible liver damage.

The expose to danger of combining the two is selfish in a healthy person taking a recommended prescribed portion of Tylenol. But Zakhari says aspirin and ibuprofen are safer alternatives to use hangover-related ills, and the best advice is to avoid Tylenol during a couple of days after toping because even some healthy people may have ~ing vulnerable. Plus more than 600 through the whole extent of-the-counter medicines contain acetaminophen, so it's pretty easy to accidentally take moreover much.

Alcohol can irritate the tolerate and aspirin and ibuprofen can inducement stomach-bleeding, so they should exist used with caution, a govermment open declaration on hangovers advises.

A study to be published in the February edition of the newspaper drug Safety found that cases of liver detriment linked with accidental overdoses of acetaminophen further than doubled between 2000 and 2007. The decomposition of data from the American Association of Poison Control Centers set up a rise in liver damage caused by acetaminophen alone, and in medicine combining it by opiate drugs, which includes the painkiller Vicodin.

The study lacked premises on alcohol use, but it's convenient some cases involved drinking, said study maker Randall Bond, a medical toxicologist at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Most liver loss seen in the study was petty, he said.

Of course, routine, too great use of alcohol alone can efficient ~ liver damage, so making hangovers a dress is not a good idea.

Time is actually the only cure, Zakhari said. Because toping alcohol can cause fitful sleep, acquisition extra sleep the next day be possible to help. Zakhari advises calling in disordered if it happens to be workday.

"I get seen some people go to labor with a hangover and their output is in some place between zero and 1," he declared.

As for Zakhari, he's not even been drunk. He can't receive alcohol.

"If I drink more than single drink, I get nauseous and spew," he said.

So to celebrate this year, he'll with appearance of truth have a "casual glass of wine with dinner with friends and watch the globe drop."

Cheers!
