TUESDAY, Dec. 27 (HealthDay News) -- New careful search finds some truth in the ~en saying that whatever doesn't make away with you will make you stronger.

While extremely harrowing experiences such as being assaulted or surviving a violent gale can cause psychological damage, less active life challenges can help you be ~ed psychological resilience, according to Mark Seery of the University at Buffalo.

In common study, he and his colleagues form in a mould that people who suffered many traumatic events were more distressed in not partial, but they also found similar problems in the many the crowd who had not experienced any so adversity.

People who had experienced more negative life events had the highest state of equality of mental toughness.

In another study, the researchers looked at folks with chronic back pain and found that those who had experienced some serious life challenges had better changeableness than those who'd faced a destiny of adversity or none at every part of.

The findings appear in the December way out of the journal Current Directions in Psychological Science.

People who gain been through difficult experiences have had an opportunity to develop their ability to cope and to learn in what plight to get help from family and friends while they need it, Seery said.

But he stressed that parents shouldn't intentionally invent life difficult for their children in the trust that it will help them become greater up to be well-adjusted adults.

"Negative events bring forth negative effects," Seery said in a newspaper news release. "I really look at this like being a silver lining. Just since something bad has happened to someone doesn't purpose they're doomed to be damaged from that particular aspect on."
